Reading the profiles of women entrepreneurs in this group, it seems the biggest hurdle is getting yourself out there and having people find you. I’m by no means an expert, but have been online since 1999. Maybe we can talk about what has worked for each of us. Keeping in mind that my business is product oriented, here are a few things that have helped me:
1. Start a blog to begin with, and then connect with other women business owners. Try to build relationships and start a blog link - make sure you have a link to your site/store on your blog. One of the important things to remember about blogging and linking is that it gets you more visibility and exposure via search engines and spiders. Remember that the more places and times your company name is listed or linked, the higher your search engine ranking. Also important is to use words and phrases (keywords) that are specific to your product or service on your website or blog. Also keep in mind that it is not always important to only talk about your business in your blog. That’s nice, but my experience has been that my customers and visitors want to know more about me and what goes on behind the scenes, in my life, and my inspirations. There are several blogging software sites – I use Typepad, which is fee based, but there is also Blogger and Wordpress.
2. Join other free & easy networking sites, such as Flickr, which is a photo sharing site. Then, join some of the crafty/creative groups and upload/post your pictures to those groups. Also, make sure you link your site/store in your profile.
3. Check out some of the other networking sites online, such as
www.theswitchboards.com and
www.ladieswholaunch.com.
4. Look into doing some shows: this is the perfect time of year, especially if you want to start slow. Many schools, churches, synagogues and charity groups have holiday boutiques where you can pay a small fee for a table (and sometimes a percentage donation – all tax deductible!) to sell. Give out your card to everyone who walks by, and have a clipboard to gather names and addresses (emails too) for a mailing list.
5. Include an email newsletter sign up on every page of your website. I use Vertical Response, but there are many other services. I send out email newsletters once a month with updates, new products, sales and upcoming events.
6. Send out Press Releases! Launched your website? Have a new product? Featured somewhere? Send out a release! Check into PR Web, which is an online press release distribution service. Also, take that same press release and email it to all the local newspapers and magazines in your immediate area. I did this and got a profile in our local magazine 4 years ago.
Marketing is almost as much work as producing! I know there’s more – but I’m drawing a blank and I have to get back to work!
Does anyone else have any ideas?
