Hi,
Congratulations on your success!! I also want to be one the successful business women but I am not sure how to market my products to my future clients. My business is going to be in importing women fashion accessories and handy craft goods mainly from Asia. My target customers are departmental stores, small retail stores and any one who is willing to purchase my goods. I will appreciate if you can give me any insight.
We are a rare species. I have a confession. My real name is Diane. I had a art history teacher in college ( in Maryland) her name was Dian Fetter. I changed my name shortly after graduating, at the dismay of my mother!
Hi Dian,
I attended your PR seminar at the IFDA conference early last month. The resources your shared have been just great, and I've joined this site as a result. Sent you a friend request just now. Thanks for everything.
Hi Dian - I've just created another networking site for small businesses based in Orange County, CA. Check out www.small-business-oc.com. It's a great place to promote your business locally.
Hi Dian. Thanks for sharing this site with the DraperyPros! I've been reading the posts regarding your work with Michael Payne. Congratulations! Don't you just love your job? I feel so blessed to have a career that I am so passionate about.

That's great! - Congrats on the Michael Payne Job! It's fun working for celebrities - Several times we have done work for Kathy Sledge of the Sledge Sisters who sing the song "We are Family". We also have a current job working for her. I'll have to cut a video of her to put on my web site too!

If you are in business, what is the name of your business?
Designs by Dian
Where did you get your idea for your business or the business you'd like to start?
I took some interior design classes, worked with a designer doing model homes, and then worked at Calico Corners, which I really enjoyed. I realized my niche would be custom window treatments and custom bedding & accessories, since not everyone has sewing talent.
Where is (will) your business located? (City and State)
Mission Viejo, CA
If you already have a website, what is the address for your business?
How long have you been in business? (Or when do you plan to open?)
In business since 1987.
How many employees do you have, if any?
0
What is your annual revenue?
$100K-$250K
Describe your product or service, or the product you plan to introduce to the market.
I design, sell, sew and install custom window treatments and custom bedding. I especially enjoy working with couples who have the budget to add this element to their home, and I've been known to save marriages with my service!
How did you (or plan to) fund your business startup?
personal savings
What was (is) the biggest hurdle in getting your business off the ground?
Working around the clock to meet deadlines, while also working a part time job. It took about 5 years before I was able to work full time in my business. Also, pricing my products was an issue.
What would you advise other women interested in starting a similar business?
Connect with other people who are doing the same business. With the Internet, I would bet there's a specialized group for every business. You can learn an incredible amount from others, but don't think you have to "learn it all" before you start. You continue to learn every day you are in business.
What has been your biggest mistake?
I don't look at anything I do as a mistake, rather I look at it as an opportunity to learn. If I were to name one thing, it might be that I have worked more than I probably should, but then again, I'm a people pleaser and I want to keep my promises to them. I'd say I don't allow myself as much free time.
What has been your smartest move?
To get involved in my industry. I started an Internet networking group of interior designers and drapery workrooms back in 1997, and from that, many opportunities opened up to me that never would have come about. I am now working with Michael Payne (HGTV's "Designing for the Sexes")
