Profile Information

What is your name?
Lauren Brown
Are you currently heading a woman-owned business?
Yes
If you are in business, what is the name of your business?
The Renaissance Report/Lauren Brown Media
Where did you get your idea for your business or the business you'd like to start?
For 2 years I ran a campaign called The Renaissance Project which supported independent and emerging talent in all creative areas ranging from comedic to culinary. This included providing PR and Marketing support for unknown artists relocating to the Atlanta area and looking to break into the entertainment industry.

After a 1 year hiatus and much clamoring from my peers about what I was going to do next, I decided to launch The Renaissance Report. A weekly internet radio broadcast in which we play only the music of new and emerging talent, feature and interview new acts, and provide as much insider industry info as we can.
Where is (will) your business located? (City and State)
Atlanta, GA
If you already have a website, what is the address for your business?
http://www.theren.net
How long have you been in business? (Or when do you plan to open?)
Lauren Brown Media is entering its 5th year as a full service, PR, New Media Marketing, and Corporate Communications firm.
How many employees do you have, if any?
1-5
What is your annual revenue?
$10K-$25K
Describe your product or service, or the product you plan to introduce to the market.
We provide Public Relations, New Media Marketing, and Corporate Communications to all businesses big and small with a specialized concentration in music and entertainment industries.
How did you (or plan to) fund your business startup?
personal savings, friends and family, private investors
What was (is) the biggest hurdle in getting your business off the ground?
Staying at it day in and day out, and when you don't want to work, and when no one supports you or your ideas.
What would you advise other women interested in starting a similar business?
Hit the ground and tell everyone you meet what it is you are attempting to do. Help comes from all places, and usually roads and avenues we least expect.
What has been your biggest mistake?
Giving up when things got rough, or difficult. Setbacks are only obstacles that can be overcome. So many times, I took a closed door as, "well that must be the end of that" as opposed to looking for an open window.
What has been your smartest move?
Learning that failure is to be expected and is ok. And using failures as greater challenges I can focus on changing into successes.
Are you willing to answer questions from other women business owners about your business?
Yes
What is your email address?
lauralibr@gmail.com

Greetings Ladies!

I am excited to used MWOB as a testing ground for ideas I want to implement here in Atlanta. It is my hope that I will get to meet many of you who have a genuine interest in collaborating on any project I may be taking on.

Next month on Febryary 22 and 23. Tavis Smiley will be hosting his annual State of the Black Union in New Orleans, Louisiana. If you have never been to this event, it is amazing and each year Tavis amasses a panel of top entrepreneurs, academics, politicians, artists, activists and more and will with out question change your life.

I want to make it insanely clear this is not an exclusively "Black" event. This is an event meant for anyone who seeks to be successful in America. Tavis and his guests explore issues of race, gender, economics, crime, government, international affairs and so much much more. It is an incredible networking opportunity and an all around great time.

I am planning a round trip via charter bus from Atlanta to New Orleans. The trip will cost about $150 per person. We will leave from Atlanta on Thursday in order to participate in the Day of Service being held by Tavis on Friday in which volunteers will participate in varied projects around the city that will contribute to the very stalled rebuilding of New Orleans. We will arrive back in Atlanta on Sunday.

Ladies, I hope all of you will contact me about this opportunity for several reasons. Following Katrina, I went to Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas giving out food, clothes, and personal items we had collected in Atlanta. I am most excited about the chance to go back to New Orleans and continue helping the residents b/c the effort to restore New Orleans to its old status is still underway. Secondly, this is an amazing way for you to support the Renaissance Report as we will be broadcasting live all day from the State of the Black Union. And lastly, its going to be an incredibly life changing weekend.

New Attitude

Is definitely what I am taking towards, my clients, my approach, my business today. As I am still emerging into being a full time fully operation female business owner, the plights of working for the man were stifling this week. It really made me realize however, that to take control of my time and my destiny, I have to first begin by taking control of my career.

For me and Renaissance Report everything is already in place. I have been functioning as a publicist and a freelance writer s… Continue
