Oh boy... "Firing" clients is such a huge issue. We deal with it in my "real" job too. Thankfully I haven't had to deal with it much so far in my jewelry business.

Absolutely. I will let the other strong ladies in my area know about this. Judy referred me to this site - we've been working together with one of her clients and consequently discussing the joys of owning and operating a small business.

Hello ladies! So glad to see you two connected (you and Judy Asman). That's exactly the way this site is supposed to work. Shannon - who referred you to the site? You're all the way in Atlanta! Please pass on this URL to all the friends you know and ask them to sign up. The more women we have, the more support we can offer.

Profile Information

What is your name?
Shannon Terrell
Are you currently heading a woman-owned business?
Yes
If you are in business, what is the name of your business?
Spot On Design, LLC
Where did you get your idea for your business or the business you'd like to start?
I've been in the graphic design field for over 10 years now. I was running entire creative departments and eventually realized it made sense to strike out on my own and do the same thing while building my own client base.
Where is (will) your business located? (City and State)
Atlanta, Georgia
If you already have a website, what is the address for your business?
http://www.designbyspoton.com
How long have you been in business? (Or when do you plan to open?)
3 years
How many employees do you have, if any?
0
What is your annual revenue?
$50K-$100K
Describe your product or service, or the product you plan to introduce to the market.
I provide current on-target design work for my clients which is put together in the most thoughtful and technically correct way possible.
My range of capabilities includes print, screen, web, animation and environmental (large scale) design.
How did you (or plan to) fund your business startup?
personal savings
What was (is) the biggest hurdle in getting your business off the ground?
It was definitely building my client base and waiting for the first couple of rounds of payments to come in. It was a scary time and the only time I've really had doubts about striking out on my own.
What would you advise other women interested in starting a similar business?
Make sure you're as responsive as possible. Many clients are under the impression (thanks to our predecessors) that freelance designers are slackers. I try to be more reliable than a full-time employee in order to gain my clients' trust and confidence.
What has been your biggest mistake?
Not getting print specs on a large project in writing from the vendor. I had the misfortune of working with a vendor who forgot what he asked me to do, then lied to my client about it. I always make sure I have everything in writing after that experience.
What has been your smartest move?
Creating this business. I will never again be underpaid and overworked. I also have the option to stop working with a client if I don't like the way they treat me or do business. The sense of freedom that running your own small business gives you is worth every moment of doubt in the beginning.
Are you willing to answer questions from other women business owners about your business?
Yes
What is your email address?
shannon@designbyspoton.com
