Thanks, Kim. It's a monthly column and this is my third one. People are taking notice because I intentionally write it with an edge and what some might consider controversial issues. I only know how to tell the truth and I've been told that my contribution is helping the magazine. I asked them not to edit my writing because it is so personal to me and my philosophies. So far Jill Singer (editor) and Cindy Pinkus (publisher) have adhered to my wishes. Sure would love to make a regular contribution to OC Metro someday. I have has a fantastic response in terms of new business for my company as well. I'm glad you like it - you opinion means a lot. Off to a BBQ ... Have a great day! Erin

Profile Information

What is your name?
Erin K. Baldwin
Are you currently heading a woman-owned business?
Yes
If you are in business, what is the name of your business?
We Love Startups!
Where did you get your idea for your business or the business you'd like to start?
Have you heard the phrase, "you don't know what you don't know"? Well, it's like being a first time homebuyer, you don't even know the right questions to ask much less whether the answers you receive are credible and in your best interests. This is what it's like starting a new business. Most brand new entrepreneurs are very vulnerable and "We Love Startups!" is a safe environment to arm new entrepreneurs with information so that they can make informed decisions, rather than decisions based on fear. There is a lot to be said for "knowledge is power." You leave our seminars with a tool kit of empowerment to start you on your way! That's why my Saturday all-day seminars are FREE. This is my heart, my passion and I wish like hell that it was around for me when I started 5 years ago!
Where is (will) your business located? (City and State)
Laguna Hills, California
If you already have a website, what is the address for your business?
http://www.welovestartups.com
How long have you been in business? (Or when do you plan to open?)
Our parent company is The Baldwin Companies that has been in business 5 years. "We Love Startups!" is holding its very first FREE seminar on March 29 at the Holiday Inn on La Paz in Laguna Hills beginning at 8:00 am. It is a full-day seminar with 15 different expert speakers packed full of information to provide our target market an overview of how to write a business plan, how to finance a business, and how to implement a business plan both from a marketing and operational standpoint. You can view the full agenda on our website.
How many employees do you have, if any?
1-5
What is your annual revenue?
$0-$999
Describe your product or service, or the product you plan to introduce to the market.
We Love Startups! (www.welovestartups.com) is a seminar company offering budding entrepreneurs and other businesses in varying stages of growth the knowledge, tools, resources and confidence to start and build successful independent business endeavors.

We offer free one-day seminars presented every Saturday in different locations in southern California and paid 5-day intensive seminars. All of our seminars have three primary educational objectives: (1) Creating a business plan that will help you not only acquire the capital you need to get going but a working document to guide a business through its first 5 years of operations; (2) Financing the business plan. There are so many ways to generate start-up and growth capital today and the experts themselves will tell you how to do it; and (3) Implementing the business plan once it is funded! Again, experts in every area of business from human resources to taxes to commercial real estate to websites will be there to inform, educate and inspire.

In July of 2008, a 30-day online version of the 5-day intensive seminars will be available for those who can't take 5 days away from their busy lives and businesses.

The website has a detailed explanation of our programs and I welcome anyone to attend. I am also looking for expert speakers to fill panel positions!
How did you (or plan to) fund your business startup?
personal savings
What was (is) the biggest hurdle in getting your business off the ground?
Trying to stay in the moment. Because of the excitement and buzz generated from the article in the OC Register, I have visions of international headquarters in the south of France. But for right now I am keeping my feet right here in Laguna Hills and with childlike enthusiasm will take it one day at a time.
What would you advise other women interested in starting a similar business?
There is never a "perfect time" to start a business. Starting your own business can be a risky venture but for most VERY rewarding. After 22 years in corporate America, I have often wished I had done it sooner! One thing is for sure, “you can’t get to second by keeping your foot on first.” So making a decision to “go for it” is the very first step. I quit my job as a single mom with $1,000 in the bank because I was told that I had hit the “glass ceiling.” I refused to believe that I had reached my earnings potential so the risk was a “no -brainer.” You must be gutsy to be an entrepreneur.
What has been your biggest mistake?
None yet, I'll let you know after our first FREE seminar on March 29! Maybe not starting this sooner!
What has been your smartest move?
GOING FOR IT! Despite some petty insults of me and the writer posted on a blog under the online version of my Orange County Register article as well as some other places, I held my head high and KNEW in my heart that my vision and mission was much stronger than any negative comments or unfounded and anonymous complaints. I could have folded believing that the negativity would hurt my chances of success but I forged ahead. That was and will always be my smartest strategy because, "Quitters never win, and winners never quit."
Are you willing to answer questions from other women business owners about your business?
Yes
What is your email address?
