Welcome Jan...I appreciate your comments about being afraid to approach people. Sometimes sales is really the hardest part, but if we don't do it, we sink. This is a good first step to promoting yourself. Thanks for joining. Feel free to create a forum and ask any questions you've been seeking answers to regarding your business. I've found the women here extremely supportive. And please pass the word to other women business owners you know. You can use the "invite" tab at the top of this page to make it easy. Welcome!

Profile Information
What is your name?
Jan Ward
Are you currently heading a woman-owned business?
Yes
If you are in business, what is the name of your business?
Sweet Whimsy
Where did you get your idea for your business or the business you'd like to start?
I tried being a consultant for a direct sales company and it just wasn't right for me. Since I've been a crafter all my life, it was just natural to try out my own crafting business.
Where is (will) your business located? (City and State)
Land O Lakes, FL (but customers can shop online 24/7 anywhere)
If you already have a website, what is the address for your business?
How long have you been in business? (Or when do you plan to open?)
Just started Sweet Whimsy in February 2009.
How many employees do you have, if any?
1-5
What is your annual revenue?
$1K-$10K
Describe your product or service, or the product you plan to introduce to the market.
Sweet Whimsy has fun, whimsical items that are all hand made. We have hand painted items (boxes, step stools, giant clothespins, frames), decoupage clipboards, altered pendants and more! We can customize all of our designs just for you!
How did you (or plan to) fund your business startup?
personal savings
What was (is) the biggest hurdle in getting your business off the ground?
My biggest hurdle was getting known in the community. I didn't have a big budget for marketing so had to be creative in ways to market my business.
What would you advise other women interested in starting a similar business?
Realize that you have to put yourself out there and spread the word about your business. People won't know to look for you so you must market your business every way possible!
What has been your biggest mistake?
Being too disorganized. My workspace is overly cluttered which makes it difficult to craft at times.
What has been your smartest move?
Getting my business going immediately! Even with only a small inventory, I started doing local vendor events.
Are you willing to answer questions from other women business owners about your business?
